Virtual Private Network

Technological evolution has improved the dimension of communication to a large extent.
In olden days secure business communication between two organisations were done through leased circuit lineslike the T1,ISDN or the OC3.
And one major limitation of this was the increase in cost as the distance between two entities increased.
With technological evolution in this field came the so called VPN or the Virtual Private Network.A VPN enables two organisations to share secured information with each other using the public network.
VPN has become the logical solution for remote access. It has reduced the cost of communication, has increased flexibility;i.e.has improved response times and helped in flexible work schedule.
VPN relys on tunneling to create private network that reaches across the internet.Tunneling is the process of placing an entire packet within another packet and sending it over the network;the protocol  of the outer network is understood by the network on both outer points(tunnel interfaces)

Tunneling requires three different protocols-

  1. Carrier protocol:protocol used by the network that the information is traveling over.
  2. Encapsulating protocol:i.e. SSL,IPSEC that is wrapped around the original data for security
  3. Passenger protocol: the original darta
